Pinot Grigio ‘Le Tre Rìe’ Veneto IGT
Our first recipient does set the bar very but is deserving of special attention having produced a thoroughly enjoyable wine.
This is no run of the mill PG, nothing convoluted or diluted here, just pure lime, jasmine and banana aromas and fresh greengage and bitter lemon fruit flavours with tinned asparagus and tomato leaf flavours. Mineral, complex and fresh, a bone dry and very lovely wine.
A beautiful little estate nestled in the hills of Valeggio sul Mincio to the south of Lake Garda, close to the town of Custoza, in the middle of the little-known, and oft misunderstood, wine region of Custoza DOC. There are not many advantages to farming in a vineous backwater, but perhaps there is less pressure to conform and forging a new path is easier... and Alessia is certainly swimming against the tide in Custoza.
The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and certified organic. The morainic soils are rich in minerals and well suited to quality Pinot Grigio, a variety that matures early here and is usually harvested in August. Grapes are picked by hand, pressed and taken off the skins for a natural spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks. Malolactic conversion is blocked to keep the freshness and the wine is bottled without the addition of sulphur.
